For severely depressed patients who may have waited several weeks or even months to discover whether specific anti-depressant medications take effect—often to no available—TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is one of the fastest and most effective ways to relieve symptoms.
TMS therapy is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for depression and OCD that does not require surgery or medication. TMS therapy ranks among the most technologically advanced treatments available for depression. A safe, noninvasive, and effective outpatient therapy, TMS has helped thousands of patients with depression who have not received adequate support from antidepressants.
How Does TMS Work?
TMS Therapy is an outpatient procedure our physicians perform right in the office, with no anesthesia or sedation needed. Through a magnetic coil, the TMS Therapy system generates highly concentrated, magnetic fields which turn on and off very rapidly. As these magnetic fields move into the brain, they produce very small electrical currents. These electrical currents activate cells within the brain which are thought to release neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Since depression is thought to be the result of an imbalance of these chemicals in the brain, TMS can restore that balance and, thus, relieve depression.
BrainsWay D‘s unique, patented treatment method stimulates deep and broad neuronal targets. The treatment involves deep magnetic stimulation of the bilateral prefrontal cortex, which has been shown to be responsible for depression, and has been shown to significantly improve depression symptoms in many patients, leading to remission in about one third of patients.
